Kanye skipped them, Jay-Z ran them, but T.I. (pictured) basically stole the show (from jail no less!), taking Record of the Year for
Paper Trail and best collaboration (with Rihanna for
"Live Your Life") at last night's
2009 BET Hip- Hop Awards taping in Atlanta—the show will be broadcast on October 27. His fiancee Tameka "Tiny" Cottle accepted the hardware on his behalf. According to
Billboard,
Jigga won the MVP award,
Drake took home Rookie of the Year (ugh!) and
Ice Cube won BET's version of a lifetime achievement award, the "I Am Hip-Hop" icon award.
Kanye West, meanwhile, didn't attend for fear that, like the Hulk, he might lose control of his primal urges and ruin another awards ceremony. Hilariously, dubious rap news outlet Hip Hop Game claims that Kanye is planning "to head to a Hindu retreat in a bid to escape the public spotlight." What I wouldn't give to be a fly on that temple wall.
