New Sidewalk Shed Design Shrouds Construction in Clouds

As I mentioned in a post last month, the city has been soliciting proposals to create more pleasant and aesthetically appealing designs for sidewalk sheds, which number about 6,000 in New York right now. With the deadline passed, the jury of the urbanSHED International Design Competition met on October 7, and now the three finalists (as well as some runners-up) have been announced. The coolest of the final three, by far, is the urbanCLOUD proposal by New York design firm KNEstudio (pictured), which would give those oppressive metal and wood sheds a light and playful airiness. Still, we'd love a look at all 164 proposals.

The shortlisted designs will go through another stage of development, with the overall winner announced in December and their proposal installed on a Lower Manhattan construction site. The competition jury includes Commissioner of the New York City Buildings Department Robert D. LiMandri, Department of City Planning Director Amanda M. Burden, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation Janette Sadik-Khan and more, but Curbed has set up a poll to gauge public opinion.
