London will be the center of the contemporary art world for the duration of the
Frieze Art Fair (today through Sunday), one of the largest annual art events in the world—basically their version of
Armory week. And already there's been big news. According to
The Art Newspaper, Polish artist
Monika Sosnowska's giant installation at the fair, designed to give the impression that a giant concrete slab had fallen onto one of the tents, was dismantled and removed at the last minute for looking too obviously fake.
Meanwhile, yesterday during previews of the fair, New York gallery Lehmann Maupin sold works amounting to over a quarter million dollars, including paintings by Takashi Murakami protege Mr., and two neons by Tracey Emin. All that and more—like Patti Smith playing a Mapplethorpe exhibition opening—before the fair even opened. Artinfo's got extensive coverage of all the goings on to make you wish you were in London right now.
