Art Snooty 57th Street Galleries Hop on the Art-Hopping Trend

Dumbo has First Thursdays, Williamsburg does Second Fridays, Chelsea and the Lower East Side tend to pool their gallery openings on Thursday and Friday nights, respectively, but the fancy galleries on 57th Street have traditionally shunned the art party trend. Until tonight. For the first time ever, galleries on the gilded Midtown stretch will stay open until 8pm tonight, welcoming a new audience into their somewhat intimidating digs. Though more aesthetically conservative and clearly addressed to an older, more moneyed audience than their downtown counterparts, many galleries on 57th Street also have the means to put on some fairly phenomenal shows.

Whom You Know has a helpful list of all 64 participating galleries, and Artinfo picks what they consider the best shows to catch tonight. For my part, I'd like to catch PaceWildenstein's show of Sol LeWitt work from the 80s, Jeff Wall at Marian Goodman Gallery, Brassaï at Edwynn Houk Gallery and Grisha Bruskin's sculptures at Marlborough (pictured). Of course, you can still visit 57th Street galleries anytime you like, they'll just be less stand-offish tonight—plus, presumably, free wine!
