Why Is the "Empire State of Mind" Video So Boring?

Posted by on Mon, Nov 2, 2009 at 9:55 AM

The Hype Williams-directed video for Jay-Z's "New York, New York" (a.k.a. "Empire State of Mind" with Alicia Keys) dropped on Friday, and it's really very disappointing. It's plenty pretty, obviously, but without any semblance of a narrative and, from the looks of things, a lot of stock photographs used to fill in the gaps, it actually manages to make a pretty great song insufferably boring. There are no crazy cameos like "D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)", or retro-futuristic riots like in "Run This Town", instead there's a lot of Times Square, the Financial District and tacky helicopter shots of Midtown. It basically makes Jay-Z look like a tourist in his hometown.
