The 2010
Grammy nominees were announced yesterday, and aside from the
Black Eyed Peas' increasingly superfluous male members, all the major contenders are women. Beyonce leads the pack at 10 nominations, followed by Taylor Swift at 8, familiar faces like BEP, Kanye West and Jay-Z, and then Lady Gaga with five. As some have
noted, MGMT's appearance in the Best New Artist category must have involved some time travel, and presumably those who wanted the rules
changed so that Lady Gaga was eligible for that Gram cracker will cry foul.
Kanye getting more nominations than Jay might seem strange since his their albums, 808s and Blueprint 3, don't even compare, but given how many collaborations and beats Kanye stacked up this year it's not all that surprising. Nice to see that Mos Def got on there for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Album in an otherwise very radio-rap driven field, and the fact that Blueprint 3 is missing from the Rap Album nominees leaves that section wide open. Eminem, I guess? Check out all 10,000 nominees here.
