Everyone seems to be enjoying this Ben Ratliff piece in yesterday's Times about a "six-hour theory symposium on black-metal music that commenced on Saturday afternoon at Public Assembly." Next week? Dungeons and Dragons. Sorry, that wasn't nice.

Ann Powers over at the other Times wonders if the induction of ABBA into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame signals a shift in how the terribly out-of-whack institution will conduct its operations.

Speaking of Ann Powers, she's also in the middle of her year-end roundtable discussion with Jody Rosen, Carl Wilson and Jonah Weiner about the past 12 months in music.

Along with the announcement of a bundle of reissues Kill Rock Stars label is offering a free download of a recently uncovered unreleased Elliott Smith song. Unsurprisingly, it's very good and you should get it.
