ArtsBeat reported that Stanley Tucci—currently in Peter Jackson's
The Lovely Bones and most recently as Paul Child in
Julie & Julia—will make his Broadway debut as a director in an upcoming revival of Ken Ludwig's backstage comedy
Lend Me a Tenor, set to begin previews in March at the Music Box theater for an April 4 opening. This will be the farce's first return to Broadway after making its debut there in a 1989 production that continued for over 14 months and nearly 500 performances.
The play tells of a famous opera star coming to perform Otello at a gala fundraiser for the Cleveland Opera, being given a generous dose of tranquilizers only to wake up and find an assistant (our hero Max, still not cast) made-up in blackface for the role of Othello and preparing to take the stage in the opera star's place. Tucci has never directed on the big stage yet, but has helmed four films and was nominated for a Tony for his performance in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune in 2003. So far, casting for the production includes Anthony LaPaglia, Tony Shalhoub and Brooke Adams.
