There's an important period in many boys' lives (girls' too, perhaps, although comic book readers are mostly male, so...), somewhere between the ages of 12 and 14, when comic books and superheroes become slightly less important markers of identity and socialization than music and rockstars. The Brooklyn-based comic book artist
Cliff Chiang has frozen that crucial developmental moment in time with
his series of classic 80s album covers re-made with superheroes. It's a rather short series—featuring Batgirl as Prince (above),
Elektra as Jennifer Beals on the
Flashdance soundtrack,
Vampirella on the cover of Duran Duran's
Rio, and the
Breakfast Club soundtrack
with the Teen Titans—but it makes for a very pretty and effective little nostalgia trip. Also, Batgirl as Prince? Genius. (
