After five year, three full-lengths and countless live shows, Hold Steady multi-instrumentalist Franz Nicolay has announced that he left the band late last year. Here's the note he posted on his website:

"You should know: I've left the Hold Steady. I told the band I'd be leaving in early September, played my last show with them in Minneapolis around Thanksgiving, and dotted the t's and crossed the i's this week. Five years seemed like a nice round number. Thanks to everyone who was a part of the experience, especially the Unified Scene [the band's fanclub], who are nice folks."

His contributions to the band will be missed, for sure, and it'll be interesting to see if they can find someone even half as versatile to replace him. His piano playing had grown more integral to the sound on recent records, and his background vocals provided a sufficiently faux-operatic counterpoint to Craig Finn's half-spoken, half-sung leads. More details to follow, hopefully. [via Pitchfork]
