Film Concerning the 2010 Academy Award Nominations

So this morning, with the announcement of this year's Oscar nominations, we see the results of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' wonderful decision to expand the Best Picture field to ten nominees: I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to seeing "Best Picture Nominee" on the DVD box for An Education. (Although this list does seem sorta like the list the Academy wanted: some critical and film-historical bona fides with A Serious Man and Inglourious Basterds, and populist points for The Blind Side and Up and District 9. I look forward to many more years of the Academy having twice as many chances to be comically wrong about movies, and a much wider range of movies to potentially be wrong about. (Nice work jerryrigging the process to ensure more respectable fest-circuit names in the Best Foreign Film nominations however.)

In other news, The L Magazine heartily congratulates Kathryn Bigelow, who today became just the fourth woman ever nominated for a Best Director Oscar, an award she will almost certainly lose to her ex-husband, James Cameron.

At some point between now and the awards ceremony we'll have previews and predictions, probably written by somebody other than me.
