Congratulations to
Tina Chang, Brooklyn's
new poet laureate. So yes, Brooklyn has a poet laureate. The position doesn't pay anything, and is comprised mainly of writing wacky limericks for Marty Markowitz to read to his cats, but still, I'm glad the Borough of Churches (and Whitman!) sees fit to honor the oldest art. Chang teaches both at Hunter and Sarah Lawrence and said, upon receiving the honor from a short list of 21, "I see myself as an ambassador and activist on behalf of poetry."
Which is good, because we really like poetry, too.
