In essence, the scheme would provide much-needed links between all the relatively bike-friendly neighborhoods immediately adjacent to Downtown Brooklyn, which are currently separated by the dangerous highway-like lanes of traffic on Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues. One of the only viable routes through that mess, over the Carlton Avenue bridge, was recently shut down for Atlantic Yards-related construction. The proposal, drawn up by committee member Mike Epstein, is available as a Google Doc for your perusal, and most importantly calls for new bike lanes on 3rd Avenue and Lafayette to get cyclists between Fort Greene and Boerum Hill/Park Slope safely.
