MCC Theater's production of
The Pride, the first play by Alexi Kaye Campbell currently following a premiere in London with an already almost sold out run at the Off-Broadway Lucille Lortel Theater, only opened on Tuesday and already yesterday was given a one-week extension. Despite a cautiously positive
Times write-up and a forthcoming
L Mag review, the melodrama has generated huge buzz in part due to the overwhelming and slightly absurd handsomeness of its male leads Hugh Dancy and Ben Whishaw (pictured).
They play two pairs of men in 1958 and 2008, the first of whom have to conceal their attraction to one another, while the contemporary gay couple suffers through a more conventional set of crises. Originally slated to close March 21, The Pride will now run through March 28.
