There are many funny/terrible things in this Times article on federal and state gun legislation in the Obama years. Here are some of them:
-State legislatures in Virginia, especially, are rushing full-speed ahead to loosen gun control. Virginia will soon allow people to carry concealed weapons in establishments that serve alcohol, and repealed long-standing ban on purchasing more than one handgun a month; Arizona and Wyoming are considering allowing people to carry concealed weapons without permits; Montana and Tennessee approved in-state loopholes to federal gun control regulation. (States' rights!)
-Obama, meanwhile, has "has failed to deliver on campaign promises to close a loophole that allows unlicensed dealers at gun shows to sell firearms without background checks; to revive the assault weapons ban; and to push states to release data about guns used in crimes." He also signed bills with riders permitting guns into national parks and luggage on Amtrak. An administration official, reached for comment, offered the most tepid bolierplate "the president remains committed..."-type statement you can imagine.
-Still, the NRA doesn't trust him! "We have had some successes, but we know that the first chance Obama gets, he will pounce on us," said the NRA's Wayne LaPierre.
In conclusion, America is stockpiling weapons, to defend its weapons stockpile, from the imminent incursion of our incredibly deferential commander-in-chief.

One of President Sotero’s first actions in the White House was ordering to the DOD to destroy all once fired brass. These spent casing were sold to ammunition remanufacturers who reloaded them and sold them to the general public. With the severe ammunition shortage that has been seen in the past several years, the destruction of 100’s of millions of spent cartridges would have driven up the price of civilian ammunition and made the current shortage even worse. Not to mention the DOD makes a tidy sum from selling spent casings and they would have to sell it for 1/10th the price if it were converted into scrap. Baucus, Tester and Rehberg did step in before this new rule change went into effect but I think this was the administration’s “feeler” to see how closely they were going to be watched on gun control issues.
I think its safe to say that the reason Sotero hasn’t pushed through any new gun control, or even talked much about it is because its wildly unpopular and he has more pressing issues. Make no mistake, Sotero’s legislative record is very clear about his contempt for the second amendment.
