The Headline "Oldest Living American Dies" Seems Wrong Somehow, Doesn't It?

Posted by on Tue, Mar 9, 2010 at 9:31 AM

Mary Josephine Ray, who at 114 going on 115 years old was America's oldest citizen and the second-oldest person in the world, died yesterday in. (Saving you the math, she was born in 1895.) She was a Red Sox fan, and died peacefully in the nursing home where she had been living since age 101; a widow since her 70s, she's survived by two sons in their 80s.

The oldest living American is now a spry 114-and-a-half year-old from Iowa; Japan's Kama Chinen, a week older than Ray, remains the world's oldest person—for now.
