Theater Evan Rachel Wood Drops Out of Broadway's "Upcoming" Spider-Man Musical

Sad Spider-Man lost his Mary Jane.

Last week news broke that the problem-plagued production of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, an upcoming Broadway musical based on the Marvel Comics series (whose various hiccups we've followed quite closely) that's to be directed by Julie Taymor and set to music by Bono and The Edge, has lost its Mary Jane Watson, Evan Rachel Wood, who dropped out of the project due to a "scheduling conflict." While this may actually have to do with a scheduling conflict—the show, originally slated to open right about now, has been pushed back to an unspecified date later this year and will not be eligible for 2010's Tonys—what Wood is probably trying to say is: "I'm not quite ready to ruin my career yet."

Meanwhile, Alan Cumming is still on board as the Green Goblin, and indie-rock hunk Reeve Carney will play Peter Parker. Auditions are currently being held for a replacement Mary Jane (there's even an unofficial poll), and we nominate the excellent Marin Ireland, currently in A Lie of the Mind at the Acorn and recently on Broadway in After Miss Julie. Of course, whether or not you actually need real actors when people are flying across the stage to anthemic U2 is debatable. (CultureMonster)
