How Julie Mehretu's Massive Postmodern Storms Get Made

Julie Mehretu, the outstanding Ethiopian-American artist whose sprawling, swirling large-scale paintings are kind of like Kandinsky for the information age, is currently prepping a show of recent works produced at her Berlin studio for a major show at the Guggenheim (opens May 14). Her name, not coincidentally, appears a couple of times in our Spring Arts issue, which hits stands and webs on Wednesday. And since we're on the subject, Art21 recently visited said Berlin studio and spoke to Mehretu's assistants about her process:
