Update: Check Out Near-Future, Bike-Friendly Flushing Avenue

Posted by Benjamin Sutton on Wed, Mar 17, 2010 at 4:07 PM

As I mentioned in passing this morning, a Department of Transportation proposal to make Flushing Avenue along the Brooklyn Navy Yard safer for cyclists—as a link in the projected 14-mile Brooklyn waterfront bikeway—is on the fast track through various approval processes. The plan would make car traffic one-way westbound (at present there's virtually no eastbound car traffic), with drivers and buses diverted onto Park Avenue, leaving room for two parking lanes, a planted median, and a two-lane bike path connecting to Williamsburg Street and Navy Street at either end. Streetsblog offers this pretty cross-section of what it's expected to look like by late July.
