Discovery News reports on a recently published study on the history of animal suicide. Particular attention is paid to the case of a Newfie who drowned himself in 1845, because he just couldn't take it anymore. The long, natural history of depressed animals offing themselves jibes with what we at the L have long assumed about animals as heartbreakingly clear windows into our own existential crises.

In her Art of Memoir interview in the current issue of the Paris Review, Mary Karr confesses to a thread of sentimentality running through her work: "I remember a poem about a suicidal dog, which began, "'Don't do it, dog.'"
