As posted on Talking Points Memo, the president's itinerary for today has seen him fly into Portsmouth, New Hampshire (their airport is much better) at lunchtime, and flying back out by 5pm.
This is, frankly, an unconscionable snub. We all know that the Obamas are quite the foodies—doesn't the president know that Portland has a thriving restaurant culture (among the most restaurants per capita in the country, with an emphasis on creative use of local ingredients)? So why not stay for dinner? Perhaps after, he could mingle with the locals and sample a local brew at beloved West End pub Ruski's.
While he's in Portland, Obama might also want to take in the Portland Museum of Art's extensive collection of the great 19th century American landscape painter Winslow Homer, or catch a "flick" at the cozy, still-inexpensive Nickelodeon, offering an up-to-date rotation of indie favorites in a convenient downtown location—it's very near the Old Port, with its lovely salt air and waterfront views. And if Obama is going to make a habit of supporting local independent bookstores, he should know that the used selection at Longfellow Books is always full of surprises.
Portland—it's a lot of fun for a little city!
