McCarren Park To Possibly Annex One Block of Union Ave

Union Avenue
The Open Space Alliance is in talks with the city, according to the Brooklyn Paper, to turn over an entire block of Union Avenue in Williamsburg between Driggs Avenue and Bayard Street (basically, where the Greenpoint Greenmarket is on Saturdays) to the Parks Department permanently. It would be an expensive process (OSA is trying to raise $50,000 for an environmental study on the project), and would also involve renovating the nearby McCarren Park dog run.

In as much as this means there will be fewer streets cutting through the park, the only major problem seems to be the disadvantage to drivers, who will have to go an extra block to get onto the BQE. Still, it's far from a done deal, and a timeline or design for the new park space is still a long way off. (StreetsBlog)
