Whitney Museum Bringing Art to High Line Despite Doubts Over New Building

Though
uncertainties still
loom over the supposed
expansion of the Whitney Museum of American Art into a new building to be constructed at the southern tip of the
High Line in the Meatpacking District, the institution has plans to put art on their plot of land whether or not there's a building there. The
Times reports that the museum has invited three artists to create outdoor installations for the site at Gansevoort and Washington Streets: Wade Guyton and Kelley Walker (known collectively as
Guyton/Walker); agitprop collagist
Barbara Krueger; and hot young 2010 Biennialist
Tauba Auerbach. Definitely a promising little line-up.
First up will be Guyton/Walker, whose plan to wrap the site in bright, printed, perforated vinyl (rendered at right) goes up for a Whitney board of directors vote next month. Each installation will last six to seven weeks, with the project ending in October. I really hope Krueger reprises her classic "I Shop Therefore I Am" motif for all those Meatpacking District designer shoppers. (ArtForum)
