Our Fantasy Plans for Staten Island's North Shore Railway Coming True?

Last summer, following the opening of the
High Line, I
daydreamed plans for similarly ambitious re-toolings of industrial sites for public use in the outer boroughs, including the transformation of Staten Island's
North Shore Railway (pictured) into a bike path from the SI ferry to the Fresh Kills Park, a plan that now seems slightly less impossible. According to
SILive, New York City Transit will hold a public meeting (in Building P of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Livingston from 7:15-9pm) on Thursday to solicit public input for possible uses for the waterfront rail bed, which hasn't been used for freight since 1989 and stopped serving passenger trains back in 1953. The route will be transformed for public transportation alternatives, but exactly what those will look like (train, trolley, subway, shuttle bus... bike?) will remain a mystery until a 14-month study is finished.
