- The Outer Critics Circle Awards trophies could do with a redesign, huh?
The Outer Critics Circle Awards, given out by critics who cover New York City theater for out-of-town and national and international publications, TV and radio—so, probably a more accurate predictor of
the Tonys than, say, the
Independent Theater Bloggers—announced their
winners for 2010 (their 60th season) this morning.
Memphis and
La Cage aux Folles lead the way at 4 awards each, including Best New Broadway Musical and Best Musical Revival, respectively.
Other semi-noteworthy prizes given, or not, to the right person: Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson tied with Scottsboro Boys for Best Off-Broadway musical; the Mark Rothko drama from London, Red, took Best New Broadway Play; The Orphans’ Home Cycle won for Best Off-Broadway Play; Denzel Washington won Outstanding Actor in a Play for the Fences revival; and Catherine Zeta-Jones (A Little Night Music) shared Outstanding Actress in a Musical with Montego Glover (Memphis). Some good news, though: Jon Michael Hill getting Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play for being awesome in Superior Donuts, and Carrie Fisher getting Outstanding Solo Show for Wishful Drinking. Should be interesting to see how forcefully she reacts to the news on her blog. (Playbill)
