The public library: not just a place to jack off to porn on the free computers.
  • The public library: not just a place to jack off to porn on the free computers.
As the city contemplates a massive budget shortfall, Mayor Bloomberg's proposed 2011 budget calls for nearly $75 million in cuts to the New York, Brooklyn and Queens library systems, which would result in 16 branch closings in Brooklyn, 14 in Queens (the second-largest public library collection in America) and 10 in the NYPL system (the largest).

The library is our most democratic institution—more democratic in practice, at least, than actual democracy. In New York, the cultural capital of the world, it's appalling that families, students, autodidacts and you and I should be shut out of access to public library system's books, films, magazines, research archives, and atmosphere of enrichment.

Save NYC Libraries has declared that today is Call in Action Day—all you have to do is call 311 and tell them not to close your local libraries. And if you haven't done your part for their postcard campaign yet, why not write your City Councilperson.
