Here at The L, we fondly remember Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) from the House's climate bill negotiations (remember those?), when he harassed the energy secretary and suggested that Americans will never drive hybrids, because they just love fossil fuels s'goddam much. At the time, Wonkette's Jim Newell (remember him?) observed, "It’s hilarious how close Joe Barton pushes the limit but always stops just before shouting 'I LITERALLY DO WHATEVER THE OIL COMPANIES TELL ME TO DO.'"

Well. Today, with BP head Tony Hayward appearing before the House Energy and Commerce Committee for his public shaming, Barton had a special message for the corporation currently (still!) spilling millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico:

Specifically, he wanted to "apologize" to the company, the day after the Obama administration not so gently suggested BP set aside a $20 fund to compensate those who've suffered from the spill (a "shakedown," Barton said, more or less echoing an establishment GOP position). Here is video, glorious video:

As Pareene points out, the oil industry has contributed $1.5 million to Barton over the course of his career.
