City Backs Off Busting Ghost Bikes, Kinda

As I wrote yesterday, the city's Department of Sanitation had been weighing a broad plan to remove old and unused bikes chained up around the city in September, including the 67 all-white ghost bikes that mark spots where cyclists have been killed in accidents since 2005, but due to much anger and opposition they've backed down. Today, NY Daily News reports that city hall will now only remove ghost bikes "if the memorial bicycle meets the derelict bicycle criteria," meaning if it's missing any major parts or looks especially unkempt. Families of dead cyclists are, understandably, pleased by the news; disheveled ghost bikes are suddenly very self-conscious. (Streetsblog)
