New Law to Make It Harder for Me to Avoid Paying Freelancers

Posted By on Thu, Jun 24, 2010 at 1:06 PM

I love the people who freelance for us. They do really great work, work that I try my best to pay fairly and promptly for... But we're still a pretty small company here at The L, with a lot going on all the time, and sometimes I fuck up invoicing or lose checks or just forget... I'm not proud of this, and I apologize to all those freelancers who've ever had to bug me about getting paid. You shouldn't have to do this.

Well, if a proposed bill passes the State Senate, you probably won't have to do much bugging in the future. Ancient powerbroker Sheldon Silver has introduced a bill that would set a two-month payment deadline after the completion of work (two months after publication?), and would provide for a Labor Dept. board to settle disputes between businesses and contractors.

This is good news for freelancers. I support the bill. (Please don't throw me in jail.)
