Bad news for all you radioactive waste locavores:
Radiac, Williamsburg's long-time storage facility for all your radioactive substances at the corner of Grand and Kent, may be forced to leave the neighborhood following passage of a law that prohibits the storage of any radioactive materials within 1,500 feet of school property. P.S. 83, two blocks away, would mean that the 40-years-old business will have to move if Governor Patterson signs legislation that has already been approved by the State Assembly and Senate.
The Brooklyn Eagle notes that most of the waste handled by Radiac is of a very low radioactive level (radiation cancer treatment materials, for instance). But all radioactive materials are equal in the eye of the law, and soon Williamsburg residents will have to look a little further for storage facilities for their home-grown plutonium. I hear there's a place in Nevada that'll take it. (Brownstoner)
