Harvey Pekar, the cranky Cleveland clerk and jazz collector whose autobiographical underground comic series American Splendor was key in the medium's increasing cultural importance and literary credibility, and made its writer something of a star (he gained further fame with the eponymous 2003 film), has died, aged 70, in his Cleveland home.
