Film Recently in Organizations That Bring You Old Movies

Over at indieWire, Eugene Hernandez has an excellent long-view piece on the recent surprise announcement that Mara Manus, the divisive executive director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, would be replaced by Rose Kuo, who interviewed for the position two years ago. The implications of the quite abrupt Friday afternoon announcement will take some time to shake out, but Kuo's programming background, following two uneasy years in which many of the FSLC's best and brightest felt alienated, and a cohesive identity for the programming at the Walter Reade seemed elusive, is a hopeful sign. (Also of note, potentially: Kuo's husband, screenwriter Larry Gross, is a frequent contributor—of fine articles—to the FSCL's Film Comment.)

Also at indiewire is a report on the plans for Astoria's Museum of the Moving Image, which has been under renovation for some time (its often wonderful repertory program has been curtailed since 2008), and which unveiled its new identity for 2011 and beyond at a press luncheon and in a press release last week. Highlights include a redesigned, modern-looking ground floor and a three-story addition, a 264-seat theater (pictured in a rendering) and a smaller screening room. Inaugural programs include a program of restored and rediscovered classic and avant-garde cinema, and after-hours DJ'ed installations so popular with the museum-going kids these days, and dovetailing nicely with a major exhibition of virtual-reality-derived installation art.
