Art Dead Artists Keep Fluxing with MoMA Staff

Late Lithuanian artist George Maciunas, a founder of the Fluxus movement whose work is in MoMA's permanent collection, pulled a posthumous prank on an unsuspecting curatorial team who made the mistake of following instructions on the artist's "New Flux Year" (1967, pictured). The piece, which Maciunas made in multiples and sent to friends and collaborators (including John Lennon and Yoko Ono), resembles a miniature leather-clad filing box, but upon first opening a spring-loaded snake and hundreds of tiny scraps inscribed with "New Flux Year" are sent flying.
