The Generation Project is a relatively new nonprofit which encourages you to "design and fund an opportunity high-need K-12 students." That is, one makes one's donation with a specific purpose, like buying a set of beloved books for a school library, sponsoring a band trip, buying new stirrup socks for the softball team (it's important!), etc etc. From their participating teachers and administrators look over the open gifts and work with the Project to implement the donations. It's earmarked philanthropy, on a much closer, more human scale. (And if you jump right into it, you might be in time for their back-to-school matching donation campaign.)
