Our 5 Favorite Artists for Kanye West's Next Album Cover

Not a good choice for the album cover: Kanye Wests self-portrait.

Following an artsy tweet yesterday and strong encouragement from my colleague Mark Asch this morning ("blog that shit"), and informed by Kanye West's previous collaborations with world-renowned visual artists like Takashi Murakami and George Condo, now seems as good a time as any to speculate upon cover art for the frequently delayed and retitled, fall music discourse-dominating Dark Twisted Fantasy (formerly "Good Ass Job").

With plenty of time ahead of the now rumored November 16 release date, here are five contemporary artists who'd make Kanye a killer album cover.

Kanye West album cover by Marina Abramovic

Marina Abramovic: Kanye West's entire life increasingly resembles one long performance art piece, so why not tap the performance art pioneer for a cover pose (which could then be re-enacted on tour)?

KAnye West album cover by Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman: Given the elaborate self-conscious parodies of himself that Kanye occasionally pulls off, and the straight-up Sherman-esque "Flashing Lights" video, this would almost be too obvious.

KAnye West album cover by Jeff Koons

Jeff Koons: Given the Murakami collabo, the other huge Pop art star seems a logical choice. And a giant, shiny, inflated Kanye West head is obviously an appealing pun.

KAnye West album cover by Chuck Close

Chuck Close: The Clinton portraitist's hyperreal style surely appeals to the similarly obsessive perfectionist Kanye. May not be sufficiently stylized enough for him though. How about another presidential picture-maker...

KAnye West album cover by Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey: Could be a little too rough-hewn for Kanye, a fan of sleek, clean lines, but nevertheless, the automatic Obama analogies would surely appeal. Still, Abramovic, Koons and Sherman seem the most appropriate picks given the album's gloomy title. We'll just have to wait and see.
