While New York City currently
abounds with misrepresentations of religious groups, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of irreverent satirical cartoon
South Park, will be premiering their largely historically accurate
Mormonism musical on Broadway in February. The production—likely extrapolated from a famous
SP episode—will begin previews at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on February 24 2011, with opening night set for March 24. Culture Monster
notes that the musical will follow parallel storylines: two young Mormon missionaries working in a dangerous part of Uganda; and the story of church founder Joseph Smith. Assuming
The Book of Mormon, a collabo between Parker, Stone and
Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez, is a success, maybe we'll finally get the
Team America Broadway puppet musical that so clearly needs to exist one day.
