In its current newsletter the Theatre Communications Group, which publishes American Theatre, reveals which playwrights' works will be the most produced in the country for the 2010-11 stage season (excluding Shakespeare, with 115, obvs). The list includes all kinds of familiar and unsurprising scribes, like Tracy Letts (August: Osage County, Superior Donuts, etc.) coming in second with 20 productions, Sarah Ruhl (The Passion Play, Dead Man's Cell Phone, etc.) close behind with 19, and a three-way tie for fourth between Annie Baker, Lynn Nottage and August Wilson. The top slot, though, is a little surprising...

1. Patrick Barlow: 26 productions
2. Tracy Letts: 20
3. Sarah Ruhl: 19
4. Lynn Nottage: 17
5. August Wilson: 17
6. Annie Baker: 17
7. Tennessee Williams: 15
8. Steven Dietz: 15
9. Edward Albee: 15
10. George Bernard Shaw: 13

Yep, Patrick Barlow, the fellow who adapted The 39 Steps from the 1915 John Buchan novel and Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 film adaptation thereof. Small cast, plenty of characters in fun costumes: a perfect recession-times play! (Playgoer)
