This weekend, City Room reports, a half-dozen blind and visually impaired cyclists will participate in a 24-hour, five-borough relay, a fundraiser for the vision-impairment advocates Lighthouse International. Blind and visually impaired riders will sit on the back of tandem bikes—they're the "stokers"—and sighted volunteers—the "captains"—talks the blind cyclist through the ride, describing the scenery as well as calling out changes in speed, gear shifting, steering and braking. The relay will unite several blind cyclists with their favorite sighted partners for four-hour shifts across the city.
