La Biennale is one of the world’s most important forums for the dissemination and “illumination” about the current developments in international art. The title of the 54th Exhibition, ILLUMInations literally draws attention to the importance of such developments in a globalised (sic) world.
Curiger's statement continues: "The work of Venetian painter Tintoretto will play a prominent role in ILLUMInations." Two of the proto-Baroque Venitian Renaissance painter's (1518-1594) most famous pieces, "The Last Supper" (1592-1594) and "The Miracle of the Slave" (1548) are on view in Venice, although how exactly his work will figure in Bienniale programming is unclear. In the meantime, here's an interview with official 2011 U.S. reps Allora & Calzadilla on their public social sculpture "Chalk" in Lima.
