News Admiral's Row To One Day Look Like Well-Planted Suburban Mall

Currently Admiral's Row, the stretch of the Brooklyn Navy Yard that faces onto Flushing Avenue between North Elliot Place and Navy Street, is home to a surreal series of crumbling historic homes increasingly indistinguishable from the surrounding overgrown wilderness. Soon, Admiral's Row will be a strip mall (above). Brownstoner snagged some architects' renderings of the future site of the Clinton Hill/Farragut Houses ShopRite yesterday (two more after the jump), and let's just say that progress looks really boring.
Today the Brooklyn Eagle has an update on construction at the site, where at least one building is getting a facelift: the United States Marine Corps Commandant’s residence, now known as Building 92, is on pace to reopen as a community center and exhibition space, part of the Navy Yard Visitor Center at Flushing and Cartlon Avenue, on Veterans Day 2011.
Meanwhile, construction/destruction on Admiral's Row is still far off. Perhaps the hope is that the beautiful homes will continue to collapse beyond repair, reducing the costs of clearing space for the new supermarket. This plan shows the restoration of two historic buildings: the partially collapsed Timber Shed right at the corner of Flushing and Navy (bottom corner in top rendering) and the Sands Street Gate (at left in the third image).
