It was only a matter of time before a commercial gallery joined the
DIY and artist-run art spaces in Bushwick, and earlier this month
Crain's reported that top-tier Chelsea gallery
Luhring Augustine had purchased a
warehouse (pictured) at Knickerbocker Avenue and Ingraham Street. The 25-year-old gallery has been leasing storage space in Long Island City, but will be converting their newly acquired warehouse into a permanent place for the storing and displaying of art.
BushwickBK reports that as much as a quarter of the 10,000-square-foot space could be turned into a gallery space, although whether this would be publicly accessible or exclusively for potential clients remains to be seen. Still, it was only a matter of time before Bushwick's increasingly ambitious and polished,
Manhattan-style exhibitions were being put on by actual Manhattan galleries moving to the area. Bushwick is the new Chelsea? Yikes! (
