Happy First Celebrity Death of 2011 (RIP Pete Postlethwaite)

Posted by on Mon, Jan 3, 2011 at 12:17 PM

Oh, dear: Pete Postlethwaite—the sunken-cheeked, authoritative character actor last seen as the world's worst florist in The Town, nominated for an Oscar for playing one of the title characters opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in In the Name of the Father, and most memorable as the hawaiian-shirted Friar Lawrence in William Shakespeare's Romeo Plus Juliet—has died age 64 after a long battle with cancer.

The last celebrity death of 2010, while I've got your attention, was the great Japanese actress Hideko Takamine, a child actress turned enduring star, best known as the enduring spirit at the center of Mikio Naruse's great melodramas of the 50s and thereabouts.
