Art / Film MoMA Slams Smithsonian by Acquiring David Wojnarowicz's A Fire in My Belly

We've told you about a few of the many galleries and institutions that, in reaction to the Smithsonian Institute's National Portrait Gallery removing David Wojnarowicz’s short film A Fire in My Belly from their exhibition Hide/Seek, have put the piece on view for free (PPOW Gallery and the New Museum among them), but today MoMA took it a step further by announcing that Wojnarowicz's censored short had been acquired for the museum's permanent collection.
MoMA has acquired both the full 13-minute version, and the shorter 7-minute edit made by Wojnarowicz himself. The Modern is the first museum to acquire the film, which also goes on public display today as part of the ongoing, permanent collection-culling exhibition Contemporary Art from the Collection. A Fire in My Belly is the 13th work by Wojnarowicz in the MoMA collection. It is also on Vimeo, so:
