Another New Art Fair, Moving Image, Added to Crowded Armory Week Roster

Chelsea Terminal Market

Following last week's news that Verge would be launching Art Brooklyn this upcoming Armory Week (March 3-6), yesterday came news of another fair for the New York art world's busiest week: Moving Image. The free video art fair is being launched by Edward Winkelman (of Winkleman Gallery), co-organized by Penny Pilkington and Wendy Olsoff of P.P.O.W. Gallery, and will take up the Terminal Warehouse at 27th Street and Eleventh Avenue (where the Bridge Art Fair was formerly held, and where Winkleman Gallery is located).

Though artists and exhibitors (to include both commercial galleries and non-profits) have yet to be announced, the curatorial committee features a robust, international roster: Zoe Butt, co-director and curator of SanArt (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam); John Connelly, director of the Felix Gonzalez-Torres Foundation; Elizabeth Dee, of Chelsea's Elizabeth Dee Gallery and creator of nearby newbie freebie art fair Independent; Raphael Gygax, curator at the Migros Museum in Zurich, Switzerland; and Kevin McGarry, director and programmer at L.A.'s Migrating Forms. The Moving Image fair will present single-channel videos, video sculptures, and larger video installations in the spectacular West Chelsea terminal building's central tunnel space. Given the success of smaller satellite fairs like the Independent, and the relative quality of, say, video_dumbo alongside the ever-more uneven Dumbo Arts Festival, this seems very promising.
