Best place to drink?
Bodega—a wine and beer bar on the corner of Troutman and St. Nicholas.
Tortilleria Mexicana Los Hermanos. Duh.
Best bookstore or record store?
Green Village Used Clothing & Furniture—a radical junk store on Starr Street between Wyckoff and St. Nicholas. I have bought countless billowing blouses and used paperbacks and they have some sick looking furniture out front sometimes.
Best person in the neighborhood whose name you don't know?
Oh my God! That lady who is always having barbecues on St. Nicholas and Troutman in the summer. You walk by and she forces home cooking on you. She literally yells at you to eat! Kids are playing with sprinklers and bicycles and stuff, and it's just really a happy block to be on.
Best grocery store or farmer's market?
There's that massive Hanna store that's supposedly opening some time this millennium, but for my money, the C-Town down the street is juuuuuuust fine. They have "organic" food, too.
Best outdoor spot?
Maria Hernandez Park is really pretty covered in snow right now. And some other parts of the neighborhood are not.
Best place to attend a show/view art/see a movie?
The Bushwick Starr.
Best coffee shop?
Best subway line?
The L train to Jefferson.
Best date spot?
Northeast Kingdom. I didn't even know who I was before I had that fucking pretzel they make there. S'good! Great cocktails and a delightful staff, too.
According to neighborhood folklore, are there any celebrities in the area?
Just the budding artists doing their respective thangs.
Which are there more of: dogs, bodega cats, strollers, American Apparel ads, or old men on stoops?
There are lots of dogs here, and if you're lucky, you'll see one wearing those incredibly charming booties.
What's missing from your neighborhood?
A Duane Reade? I don't know... I sorta feel like Bushwick has it all.
What's the biggest change since you've moved in?
The big weird aforementioned supermarket that hasn't opened yet, probably. Sometimes it seems like there are people just like, hanging out in there.
It's a Saturday night in December. You don't feel like traveling very far but are antsy for a night out. Where do you go?
I hear Tandem (bar) is the place to be.
