Queens has St. John's and Brooklyn doesn't—our borough is not usually associated with college basketball. Hey, so we ought to be proud we even made it to the championships: Long Island University's Blackbirds, who play for the college's Brooklyn campus, made an atypical appearance in the first round of the NCAA Championships (which are currently preoccupying water-cooler gamblers nationwide), but were quickly eliminated by the mighty (i.e. second-seeded) North Carolina Tarheels.

In the game on Friday night, LIU held strong in the first half, but surrendered the lead to NC in the second, who then ran away with it. The final score was 102-87.

“I thought our kids played their hearts out tonight,” head coach Jim Ferry said. “I thought we competed the best we could. We out-rebound people like crazy but it was really hard. I couldn't be more proud of our guys.” So, good for them/us. There's always next year.
