We've long been puzzled by Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz's near-schizophrenic attitudes towards the borough's cycling community, at times seeming to encourage it, but more often going hard against it. Now it all makes sense: Marty's addicted to cars.

The New York Post's David Seifman reported yesterday that our gourmand local leader

has placed his three drivers on staggered, 16-hour shifts so someone will always be available to wheel him around town between 8 a.m. and midnight, seven days a week.

Amusingly, an aid tells the Post that the 16-hour shifts are necessary because Marty's "on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year." Faulty math aside, this adds up to $177,372 per year before overtime, provided by taxpayers, so that Markowitz can get to his breakfast/lunch/dinner dates on time.

Seifman goes on to explain what a pair of the Markowitz drivers do during downtime at Borough Hall, insinuating some not-so-savory deals going on behind closed sedan doors. Also, fun fact: Staten Island borough president James Molinaro doesn't even have one driver.
