Will Greenpoint Get its New Boathouse?

This could become real!!
  • This could become real!!
Six months ago, the city announced it would devote $7 million of public funds to improve life on and around Newtown Creek, a settlement with the state for violating pollution laws. Since then, project proposals have been created and voted on, and now a state foundation has finally made its official recommendations to the Department of Environmental Conservation, the Brooklyn Paper reports. That department will allow for more input on these final recommendations at a public hearing later in the month.

Fifty original proposals were whittled down to seven finalists. Mostly in line with the results of a public vote at the end of last year, the final recommendations include the winner of that vote: a plan to acquire two sites in Queens for use as parkland.
On the Brooklyn side of the creek, the City Parks Foundation suggests spending millions on a study on renovating the Pulaski Bridge, and improvements to McCarren Park pathways. But its premier recommendation was for the Greenpoint Boathouse, which we've supported since this whole thing got underway.

On April 20, tell the state you want a boathouse! Don't let Queens win again!
