Animal Collective Welcomes Back Fourth Member Deakin and Plays a Bunch of New Songs Live

The whole gangs back together.
  • The whole gang's back together.
On the eve of Tomboy's release comes footage of that other little band Panda Bear is in, performing new songs during the kickoff show in a string of California dates leading up to Animal Collective's almost-headlining Saturday appearance at Coachella. THESE GUYS JUST DON'T STOP. Except for maybe Deakin, who took some time away from the band during Merriweather Post Pavilion but has officially returned. You can even see him in the corner of one of the videos, so you know he's a real person.

Not a whole lot to look at visually but, man, these songs... As expected, the boys don't seem to be looking to rehash the whirlpool sounds of MPP, as the first video seems them stimulating an orchestra in outer space, and the second song has them in jungle fever-"Peacebone" mode. The last one though — a nine-minute whopper that starts off with a sample of a merry little melody that might as well have been lifted from Pinocchio and ends with Avey fronting as a balladeer — is the real kicker. I would love to spend a day inside these guys' brains to see what exactly goes on up there while piecing their material together. 'Cause I'm, like, sure it's not normal.

Also, look! Now that Deakin's back on the guitar, they can play songs from Feels again...
