Theater New Theater Breaking Ground in Fort Greene

A Manhattan transplant is coming to shake up the delicate balance between Brooklyn's two Off Broadway powerhouses, St. Ann's Warehouse and BAM's Harvey Theater: Theatre for a New Audience is poised to break ground on its new home in Fort Greene Downtown Brooklyn the BAM Cultural District. A tipster tells Brownstoner that fencing is up at the site, and construction seems poised to begin—while the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership website says construction "began" in spring 2011.
The new TFANA building will rise on a space currently occupied by a parking lot on Ashland Place between Fulton Street and Lafayette Avenue (so directly between BAM's theater and opera house/cinema), and feature a rehearsal studio, offices and a 299-seat theater.
Construction is expected to last slightly less than two years, with the company—currently based in the West Village—beginning productions in Brooklyn in spring of 2013. For the time being, they're performing a mean Macbeth at the Duke through April 22.
